Tournament of Names & a Nursery Peek

It's no secret it took Toby and me a LONG time to pick out a boys name. Actually 33 weeks to be exact ;) We went back and forth on names for months and just couldn't find anything we really loved. The boy name we had picked out for Leighton we didn't really like anymore and the boy name we had for Gracen, while we still loved, we knew a few people who had used it recently and we wanted to look around a bit more.

Boy names are hard! The name we were going to use for a girl we thought about still using when we found out we were having a boy but then we changed our mind. We have had that name for years picked out for another girl and using it for a boy seemed weird.

At the beginning of our name search we threw a few names around and people gave us their opinions...after that we decided to keep our name choices to ourselves. Too many opinions made things way more confusing (not to mention annoying) and we were confused enough haha. I scoured Pinterest and Etsy searching for boy names on birth announcements, monogrammed clothes, etc. Nothing was popping out at us as THE name.

We actually abandoned our name search for a couple of months but once I was 33 weeks I decided we needed to have a name! Since this was our only boy (and baby finale) I wanted Toby to choose a name that he loved. Since both girls have family names for middle names, we decided early on to use Robert as a middle name for our boy (family name from Toby's side & his first name, his Dad's, his Dad's Dad, etc.) so that kind of made finding a first name harder. But then Toby came up with a plan...

He decided to make a tournament bracket of names. We chose 16 names we both liked and then he randomly seeded them on the bracket. We went through each group of names and had a name playoff! It was so fun and by the end we had it narrowed to two names and I let him chose the winner. After sleeping on it for a night or two, he told me the name of our baby boy...

I was THRILLED to finally have a name and ordered his wall monogram and several monogrammed outfits before he could change his mind :) We waited a few days and told a few family members but let them know opinions were not warranted because this was THE NAME haha. Of course I couldn't wait and told my mom, sisters and cousin right away. I was SO happy to have a name I had to tell someone :)

Who would've thought that my husband's obsession for all things sports would actually pay off for once ;) And it gives us a pretty cute story to share with Hayes someday. Of course I saved the bracket for his baby book.

Sure am loving my Hayes man. Perfect name for a perfect little guy!

And here's a little peek into our little guy's nursery. We went with a Kentucky/Jockey theme and used Leighton's black nursery furniture from when she was a baby. We left the walls (our former guest room) a soft green and my mom made the bedskirt, changing pad and all the throw pillows.

The pictures are a mixture of things collected over the years. The smaller horse pics are from my great-grandmothers apartment and the larger pics are jockey prints my grandmother got me several years ago at the Keeneland sale. The horse shoes are from A Taste of Ketuncky and were actually worn by horses at Churchill. The bookshelves are from Ikea and most of the books were Toby's when he was little.

The girls went through the house collecting toys that were "boyish" to fill up his baskets :) Sweet big sisters. His bedroom is the largest of the kids rooms but has the smallest closet by far! So, of course it is filled to the brim :)

The hardest thing was covering up the large wall of windows that line one side of the nursery. We ended up getting four blackout panels and when fully closed they seem to keep the light out really well. He also has a big Armoire that is filled with blankets, sheets and other baby goodies.

I'm sure his room will be a work in progress as we add little touches to make it unique for him. We still want an area rug and a few other knick knacks but overall I am pretty pleased with the way it all came together. Perfect for our Hayes man :)
