Home remodel Christmas Edition

We moved into our house in July 2015 and started our remodel on November 1, 2015.   We finished the remodel February 1, 2016.  I have wanted to take before and after pictures for like 9 months now but finally decided to do it on Friday.  Better late than never right?  I had just finished decorating for Christmas and my house was clean (this is rare). Having three kids kicks me in the tail most days haha!

First of all, let me say remodeling with three little kids is well, an experience.  We basically lived in our upstairs (with NO kitchen) for 3 months.  Our remodel was the entire first level; it included wall removal, moving a back door, new cabinets, new flooring, new wall, ceiling and trim paint, mirror removal, all new light fixtures, staircase makeover and all new windows.  It was a big job!

I pulled these before pictures off our house listing.  It's not our furniture but it gives you an idea of what we were working with.

Up first, here is the old kitchen.  Notice the wall behind the stove that separated the kitchen from the family room.  We took that out entirely.

And here's the after (sorry about the weird lighting)...  See wall gone!!! And track lighting replaced with can lights!  We also added two lights over the island.  They were actually one of my favorite purchases :)  Our floors are dark hand scraped hardwood.  We agonized over this purchase.  Literally it took us weeks!  We wanted super dark but actually settled on a much warmer brown than I had originally envisioned.  They work great.

Here is another old picture.  Basically a side view.  We ended up taking out the back door to gain some counter space and added a slider in the breakfast nook.

And this is what it looks like now...

And then in the breakfast nook we added a slider to the back yard.  Toby built a little hanging rack for our coats/backpacks and we added baskets for our shoes.

Here's a side view of the new island.  We didn't move the refrigerator, for perspective.

Old bar area...

and new bar with added wine refrigerator :)))

Ok so here is a picture looking into the old family room and what the previous owners used as a front sitting room.  Here is what it used look like.

We decided to change the sitting room (picture with the green love seat) into our dining room since the kitchen opens to both rooms now.  We repainted, had a chandelier hung and continued our hardwood floors in there.  Here's the after...

Here's the before of the family room...

Here is the after view.  You can't really tell but we took out the mirrors behind the builtins and had them repainted to match the trim.  We also changed out the lights above the fireplace and got a new ceiling fan.

This is what the previous owners used as their dining room.  We thought it was too small for a dining room and since we flipped ours to open to the family room we decided to make this room a small den.  Our girls call it the video game room.  Here is is before...

And after, new wall paint, light fixture and mirrors gone!!!  We decided to keep this room carpeted but we picked out a new neutral shag.

We replaced the old wood spindles on our staircase with wrought iron ones and got new carpet up them (I don't have any before pics).  We had originally planned to do wood all up the stairs but about a month after we move in Toby slipped down the stairs with Hayes in his arms and we decided then and there carpet was more kid friendly for now.  So we replaced the stair carpet to match the new den carpet and had the edges of the exposed wood stained to match.

Upstairs the only changes we made during the remodel was continue the hardwood down the hallway.  The hallway is super long and the laundry room is the last door on the right so we all walk back and for the down it A LOT! Wood just made more sense.  Here is the after!

Then, just a few weeks ago Toby decided to conquer the kids bathroom for a small remodel :)  He tiled it, painted the vanity and hung wainscoting on the side wall with hooks for the kids towels.  He did such a good job!  Here it is before...

And after!  He did such a great job!

So that's our little home remodel :)  We were living in the middle of a construction zone this time last year and didn't get to decorate for Christmas.  We had so much fun pulling out our Christmas decorations and seeing how it came together.  I would love to say we are completely done with remodeling but we are already talking about redoing our master bath and building a deck out back.  I still think it's easier than moving ;)))
