One more month

It is so hard for me to fully wrap my mind around the fact that Leighton is going to be TWO in just one month. These have truly been the most rewarding, challenging, testing, joyful, loving years of my life. Not to mention the FASTEST as well. It's hard to remember what life was like before Leighton. I know we slept in and relaxed a lot more but man, we must have been BORED :) She is the most amazing, beautiful, stubborn and perfect little girl I've ever known and I am so blessed to be her mama. She is growing up so fast and I don't want to forget a moment. Here are some highlights of the last month:

-We've really noticed a big change in her this last month with her vocabulary. She has always been content watching and studying others. You can tell she is thinking about everything but she has always been pretty quiet. Until these past few weeks! She talks nonstop now, repeating everything and searching for the right words to use in sentences (2-3 words at a time). It is like a light bulb has gone off in her head and she finally gets it. I love this!

-With the increase in vocabulary I have noticed she seems a lot less frustrated and her temper seems to have gotten better. It's not gone by ANY means (she was predestined to have a temper~lol) but I have noticed her tantrums seem to happen less frequently and when they do occur, they never last long. I swear she just wants to be heard and understood and when that doesn't happen she gets frustrated and reacts. When I search to understand what she is trying to say even if the end answer is "No" she seems to be fine. She just wants to be heard!

-Her love for the Wiggles has turned into a full blown obsession. She will watch an entire show now and dance and do the motions along to the songs. She always likes for Daddy and me to sing along too saying, "Sing, SING!!!" I am so happy we decided to change her birthday theme to the Wiggles. I think know she is going to love it. I can't wait to show you all what I've ordered :)

-She has a fake laugh and a fake cry. She thinks her fake laugh is quite funny and loves to do it loud so everyone can hear. She tries to use her fake cry to get her way. Sometimes it works :)

-Her personality is so versatile and it's really hard to tell what she is going to be like in a few years. She is totally girlie with her love for baby dolls, nail polish, cuddles and kisses. She's also very neat and HATES to get dirty or have anything on her hands, face or clothes. But, at the same time she has a tomboy side to her and loves to wrestle with her Daddy, play outside and watch basketball on tv. She seems to be the perfect little combination of Toby and me.

-Her favorite food is french-fries "fren-fries" and asks for them every single time we eat a meal. She can also eat an entire kids sub from Firehouse which I think is pretty impressive. She still has a deep love for chocolate and cookies and I admit to bribing her on several occasions to eat dinner or behave for a sweet treat.

-I can't tell if she is going to be shy or not. Sometimes she is timid around strangers and other times she is fine to leave me to hang out with someone new. It really depends on her mood. She does love attention and will wave and say hi to anyone who looks her way out in public. She proudly told everyone in line at the pharmacy that her Daddy was their pharmacist and I turned my back for one minute at the grocery to find her holding on to a man's shirt and talking to him. I am almost 100% sure he didn't speak English. He acted very confused about what he should do. He was literally standing still in the aisle while she held the back of his shirt until I turned around and made her let go. When I apologized he kinda smile but then ran off lol. She is crazy! She also heckled a lady on the same trip about her hat (which was really a bandanna) and would not stop screaming "Hat, HAT, HATTTT" until the woman acknowledged her. A little embarrassing ;)

-Still loves all things water-related but is cautious of the mushroom fountain at the pool. I fully expect her to be running through it by the end of summer. She tries to climb in her water table saying "bath, bath" and I can never get her out of the tub at night. One of her favorite things to do in the car is spot ANY body of water. Whether it be a pond, creek, lake, river, puddle or just merely rain. There is a small pond at the horse farm a block from our house and she starts talking about the "wa-wa" when we turn onto the street. She also has the same obsession with bikes. Nothing makes her happier than spotting a bicyclist on the street. She squeals with delight!

-She pee-peed in the potty for the first time two days ago and was SO proud of herself. She actually did it twice that day and talked about it all day. But, the next morning I tried to get her to go again and she refused. Like totally screamed at me and asked for her diaper. I've decided to just ask her if she wants to go every now and then but not make a big deal about it if she doesn't want to. Does anyone have any potty-training tips for girls? I would love to have her potty-trained by the end of summer but I don't know if this is realistic or not.

-We are still working on colors but she still thinks every color is blue (a true Wildcat in the making). I feel like she is recognizing pink sometimes. We have also started to go over letters but she thinks every letter is "B." Hey, at least she knows "B" is a letter :)

-We got her preschool information in the mail this week. Her open house is in late August where she will *gulp* meet her teachers and classmates and her first day is August 31st. Here's to hoping my postpartum emotions do not make me a crying fool on her first day! She will be going every Tuesday and Thursday from 9-noon for a whole school year. I am excited to see all that she will learn and I'm already preparing myself for my own anxiety of leaving her in the care of someone who is not my mom or sister lol! Maybe when it's all said and done I will actually be ready to leave her with a non-family-member babysitter who could actually live in the same city. Maybe???

I know these next four weeks are going to fly by and part of me hates that. It's my last month with her as a one year old. Two sounds so much older to me! I hope she knows no matter how many months go by that she will ALWAYS be my baby.

  1. Mandy! This made me tear up! I can NOT believe that 2 years have passed since she was born. It truly feels like yesterday. But you get to have a newborn so soon! Go Leigh for peeing in the potty! Yay!

  2. Leighton reminds me so much of Evie with the being girly. Minus the baby dolls... because Evie doesn't like babies at ALL. (If there's a baby in the room that means the attention isn't all on HER and that's a situation she likes to avoid.)

    Happy almost birthday, Leighton! :)
